July 1st ![]() Hear this you leaders of the people! Everyone listen! In all your history, has anything like this ever happened before? Tell your children about it in years to come. Pass the awful story down from generation to generation. After the cutting locusts finished eating the crops, the swarming locusts took what was left. After them came the hopping locusts, and then the stripping locusts too! ...They have destroyed My grapevines and fig trees, stripping their bark and leaving the branches white and bare... The grapevines and the fig trees have all withered. The pomegranate trees, palm trees and apple treesyes, all the fruit trees have dried up. All joy has dried up with them... ¤ Blow the trumpet in Jerusalem! Sound the alarm on My holy mountain! Let everyone tremble in fear because the day of the Lord is upon us. It is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of thick clouds and deep blackness. Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains, a mighty army appears! How great and powerful they are! The likes of them have not been seen before and never will be seen again. ¤ Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. ¤ For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against those evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. ¤ That is why the Lord says, "Turn to Me now, while there is time! Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping and mourning. Don't tear your clothing in your grief; instead, tear your hearts." Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful. He is not easily angered. He is filled with kindness and eager not to punish you. Who knows? Perhaps even yet He will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this terrible curse... The Lord says, "I will give you back what you lost to the stripping locusts, the cutting locusts, the swarming locusts and the hopping locusts... Then you will know that I am here among My people, and that I alone am the Lord your God." ¤ And now why delay? Get up and be baptized, and have your sins washed away, calling on the name of the Lord. ¤ Remember God's patience in the days of Noah, while the ark was being built. In that ark only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water. This water symbolizes baptism that now saves younot just a mere washing of the body, but an appeal to God for a good consciencethrough the resurrection of Jesus Christ. ¤ For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. For whoever finds me finds life and wins approval from the Lord. But those who sin against me have injured themselves. She hides and waits like a robber, looking for another victim who will be unfaithful to his wife. Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks. Don't let the sparkle and smooth taste of wine deceive you. For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And you will say, "They hit me, but I didn't feel it. I didn't even know when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can have another drink?" Proverbs 23 July 15th ![]() Don't envy evil people; don't desire their company... For they spend their days plotting violence, and their words are always stirring up trouble. A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense. Through knowledge its rooms are filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables. A wise man is mightier than a strong man, and a man of knowledge is more powerful than a strong man. So don't go to war without wise guidance; victory depends on having many godly counselors. Wisdom is too much for a fool. When the leaders gather, the fool has nothing to say. A person who plans evil will have a reputation as a troublemaker. The schemes of a fool are sinful, and everyone despises a mocker. If you fall under pressure your strength is not very great. Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don't stand back and let them die. Don't avoid responsibility by saying you don't know anything about it. For God knows all hearts, and He sees you; He keeps watch over your soul, and He knows you knew! And He will judge people according to what they have done. My child, eat honey, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to the taste. In the same way, wisdom is sweet to your soul. If you find it, you will have a bright future, and your hopes will not be cut short. Do not lie in wait like an outlaw at the home of the godly, and don't raid the house where the godly live. For the godly may trip seven times, and each time they will rise again, but by one calamity the wicked will fall. Do not rejoice when your enemies fall into trouble. Don't be happy when they stumble. For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn His anger away from them. Do not fret because of evildoers; don't envy the wicked. For the evil have no future; their light will be snuffed out. My child, respect both the Lord and the king, and don't associate with rebels. For you will go down with them to sudden disaster, and who knows where the punishment from both the Lord and the king will end? ...Whoever says to the guilty, "You are innocent" people will curse him and nations denounce him. But it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and rich blessing will come upon them... Do not testify spitefully against innocent neighbors; don't lie about them. And don't say, "Now I can pay them back for all their meanness to me! I'll get even!" ¤ Timely advice is as lovely as golden apples in a silver basket. Telling lies about others is as harmful as hitting them with an ax, wounding them with a sword, or shooting them with a sharp arrow. Putting confidence in an unreliable person is like chewing with a toothache or walking on a broken foot. Singing cheerful songs to a person whose heart is heavy is as bad as stealing someone's jacket in cold weather or rubbing salt in a wound. If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink; you will heap burning coals on their heads, and the Lord will reward you. As surly as the wind from the north brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger! It is better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a contentious wife in a lovely home. Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty. If the godly compromise with the wicked, it is like polluting a fountain or muddying a spring. Just as it is not good to eat too much honey, it is not good for people to think about all the honors they deserve. A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls. ¤ Honor doesn't go with fools any more than snow with summer or rain with harvest. When arguing with fools, don't answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are, however, when arguing with fools, answer their foolish arguments according to wisdom, or they will become wise in their own estimation. Trusting a fool to convey a message is as foolish as cutting off one's feet or drinking poison! In the mouth of a fool, a proverb becomes as limp as a paralyzed leg. Honoring a fool is as foolish as tying a stone to a slingshot. A proverb in a fool's mouth is as dangerous as a thornbush brandished by a drunkard. An employer who hires a fool or a bystander is like an archer who shoots recklessly. As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly. When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily. But with wise and knowledgeable leaders, there is stability. A poor person who oppresses the poor is like a pounding rain that destroys the crops. To reject the law is to praise the wicked, but to obey the law is to fight them. Evil people don't understand justice, but those who follow the Lord understand completely. It is better to be poor and honest than rich and crooked. Young people who obey the law are wise, but those who seek worthless companions bring shame to their parents. A person who makes money by charging interest will lose it; it will end up in the hands of someone who is kind to the poor. The prayers of a person who ignores the law are despised. Those who lead the upright into sin will fall into their own trap, but the honest will inherit good things. Rich people picture themselves as wise, but their real poverty is evident to the poor. When the godly succeed, everyone is glad, but when the wicked take charge, people go into hiding. People who cover over their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy. Blessed are those who have a tender conscience, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble. A wicked ruler is as dangerous to the poor as a lion or bear attacking them. Then David sent for her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. (She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period.) Then she returned home. Later, when Bathsheba discovered she was pregnant, she sent a message to inform David. So David sent word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the Hittite." When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the army were getting along and how the war was progressing. Then he told Uriah, "Go home and relax." David even sent a gift to Uriah after he had left the palace. But Uriah would not go home. He stayed that night at the palace entrance with some of the king's other servants. When David heard what Uriah had done, he summoned him and asked, "What's the matter with you? Why didn't you go home last night after being away for so long?" Uriah replied, "The Ark and the armies of Israel and Judah are living in tents, and Joab and his officers are camping in the open fields. How could I go home to wine and dine and sleep with my wife? I swear that I will never be guilty of acting like that." "Well, stay here tonight," David told him, "and tomorrow you may return to the army." So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next. Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he could not get Uriah to go home to his wife. Again he slept at the palace entrance. So the next morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver. The letter instructed Joab, "Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed." So Joab assigned Uriah to a spot close to the city wall where he knew the enemy's strongest men would be fighting. And Uriah was killed along with several other Israelite soldiers. When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing a lamb from his own flocks for food, he took the poor man's lamb and killed it and served it to his guest." David was furious. "As surely as the Lord lives," he vowed, "any man who would do such a things deserves to die! He must restore four lambs to the poor man for the one which he stole, and for having no pity." Then Nathan said to David, "You are that man! The Lord, the God of Israel says, 'I anointed you king of Israel and saved you from the power of Saul. I gave you this house and his wives and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And if that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more. Why then have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah and stolen his wife. From this time on, the sword will be a constant threat to your family, because you have despised Me by taking Uriah's wife to be your own. Then on the seventh day of David's mourning, the baby died. David's advisers were afraid to tell him. "He was so broken up about the baby being sick," they said, "what will he do to himself when we tell him the child is dead?" But when David saw them whispering, he realized what had happened. Then the woman who really was the mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, "Oh no, my lord! Give her the childplease do not kill him!" But the other woman said, "All right, he will be neither yours nor mine; divide him between us!" Then the king said, "Do not kill him, but give the baby to the woman who wants him to live, for she is his mother!" Word of the king's decision spread quickly throughout all Israel, and the people were awed as they realized the great wisdom God had given Solomon to render decisions with justice. ¤ God made the earth by His power, and He preserves it by His wisdom. He has stretched out the heavens by His understanding. When He speaks, there is thunder in the heavens. He causes the clouds to rise over the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from His storehouses. Compared to Him, all people are foolish and have no knowledge at all. They make idols, but the idols will disgrace their makers, for they are frauds; they have no life or power in them. Luke 7:35 1st Kings 3:16-28 Jeremiah 10:12-14 July 28th ![]() A person who doesn't give a promised gift is like clouds and wind that don't bring rain. ¤ The Lord said to Elijah, "Go to the east by the Kerith Brook at a place east of where it enters the Jordan River. Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food." So Elijah did as the Lord had told him and camped beside Kerith Brook. The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook. But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. Then the Lord said to Elijah, "Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. There is a widow there who will feed you. I have given her My instructions." So Elijah went to Zarephath... Some time later, the woman's son became sick. He grew worse and worse, and finally he died. She then said to Elijah, "O man of God, what have you done to me? Have you come here to punish my sins by killing my son?" But Elijah replied, "Give me your son." And he took the boy's body from her, carried him up to the upper room, where he lived, and laid the body on his bed. Then Elijah cried out to the Lord, "O Lord my God, why have You brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, causing her son to die?" And he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the Lord, "O Lord my God, please let this child's life return to him." The Lord heard Elijah's prayer, and the life of the child returned, and he came back to life! Then Elijah brought him down from the upper room and gave him to his mother. "Look, your son is alive!" he said. Then the woman told Elijah, "Now I know for sure that you are a man of God, and that the Lord truly speaks through you." ¤ Elijah said to Ahab, "Go and enjoy a good meal! For I hear a mighty rainstorm coming!" ...And sure enough, the sky was soon black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm! ¤ God looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heavens, to establish a weight for the wind, and to determine how much rain should fall. He made the laws of the rain and prepared a path for the lightning. Then, when He had done all this, He saw wisdom and measured it. He established it and examined it thoroughly. And this is what He says to all humanity: "The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding." And Elisha replied, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me." "You have asked a difficult thing," Elijah replied, "but if you see me when I am taken from you, then you will get your request. And if you don't see me, then you won't." As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between them, separating them, and Elijah was carried away by a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father! My father! The chariots and charioteers of Israel!" And as they disappeared from sight, Elisha tore his robe in two. Then Elisha picked up Elijah's cloak and returned to the bank of the Jordan River. He struck the water with the cloak and cried out, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" Then the river divided and Elisha went across. When the group of prophets from Jericho saw what had happened, they exclaimed, "Elisha has become Elijah's successor!" And they went to meet him and bowed down before him. ¤ When Enoch was 65 years old, his son Methuselah was born. After the birth of Methuselah, Enoch lived another 300 years in close fellowship with God, and had other sons and daughters. Enoch lived 365 years in all. He enjoyed a close relationship with God, walking with Him throughout his lifetime. Then suddenly, he disappeared because God took him. ¤ "Let me tell you about the visions and revelations I received from the Lord," Paul began. "I was caught up into the third heaven fourteen years ago. Whether my body was there or just my spirit, I do not know, only God knows. But I do know that I was caught up into paradise and heard things so astounding that they cannot be told. That experience is something worth boasting about, but I am not going to do it. I am going to boast only about my weaknesses. I have plenty to boast about and would be no fool in doing it, because I would be telling the truth. But I won't do it. I don't want anyone to think more highly of me than what they can actually see in my life and my message, even though I have received wonderful revelations from God. But to keep me from getting puffed up, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud. Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time He said, "My gracious favor is all you need. My strength is made complete in your weakness." Mark 16:19 2nd Kings 2:9-15 Genesis 5:21-25 2nd Corinthians 12:2-9 July 30th ![]() Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins! ¤ The King of Aram had high admiration for Naaman, the commander of his army, because through him the Lord had given Aram great victories. But though Naaman was a mighty warrior, he suffered from leprosy. Now groups of Aramean raiders had invaded the land of Israel, and among their captives was a young girl who had been given to Naaman's wife as a maid. One day the girl said to her mistress. "I wish my master would go see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy." So Naaman told the king what the young girl from Israel had said. "Go and visit the prophet," the king told him. "I will send a letter of introduction for you to carry to the king of Israel." So Naaman started out, taking as gifts 750 pounds of sliver, 150 pounds of gold, and ten sets of clothing. The letter to the king of Israel said, "With this letter I present my servant Naaman. I want you to heal him of his leprosy." When the king of Israel read it, he tore his clothes in dismay and said, "This man sends me a leper to heal? Am I God, that I can kill and give life? He is only trying to find an excuse to invade us again." But when Elisha, the man of God, heard about the king's reaction, he sent this message to him: "Why are you so upset? Send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel." So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha's house. But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: "Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of leprosy." But Naaman became angry and stalked away. "I thought he would surely come out to meet me! I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me! Aren't the Abana River and Pharpar River of Damascus better than all the rivers of Israel put together? Why shouldn't I wash in them an be healed?" So Naaman turned and went away in rage. But, his officers tried to reason with him and said, "Sir, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, wouldn't you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply to go and wash and be cured!" So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his flesh became as healthy as a young child's, and he was healed! ¤ Even though Jesus was God's Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered. In this way, God qualified Him as a perfect High Priest, and He became the author of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him. Acts 22:16 2nd Kings 5:1-14 Hebrews 5:8, 9 July 31st ![]() If God were to take back His Spirit, and withdraw His breath, all life would cease, and humanity would turn again to dust. Listen now and try to understand: Could God govern if He hated justice? Are you going to condemn the Almighty Judge? For He says to kings and nobles, "You are wicked and unjust." He doesn't care how great a person may be, and He doesn't pay any more attention to the rich man than to the poor. He made them all. In a moment they die. At midnight they all pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand. For God carefully watches the way people live; He sees everything they do. No darkness is thick enough to hide the wicked from His eyes. For it is not up to mortals to decide when to come before God in judgement. He brings the mighty to ruin without asking anyone, and He sets up others in their places. He watches what they do, and in the night He overturns them, destroying them. He openly strikes them down for their wickedness. For they turned aside from following Him. They have no respect for any of His ways. So they cause the poor to cry out, catching God's attention. Yes, He hears the cries of the needy. When He gives quietness, who can then make trouble? And when He hides His face, who can find Him? He prevents the godless from ruling so they cannot be a snare to the people. ¤ God is mighty, yet He does not despise anyone! He is mighty in both power and understanding. He does not let the wicked live, but gives justice to the afflicted. His eyes never leave the innocent, and He establishes and exalts them with kings forever. If trouble comes upon them and they are enslaved and afflicted, He takes great patience to show them the reason. He kindly shows them their sins, for they have behaved proudly. He gets their attention and says they must turn away from evil. If they listen and obey God, then they will be blessed with prosperity throughout their lives. All their years will be pleasant. But if they refuse to listen to Him, they will perish in life's battle and die from lack of understanding. For the godless are full of resentment. Even when He punishes them, they refuse to cry out for help. They die young after wasting their lives in immoral living. But by means of their suffering, He rescues those who suffer. For He gets their attention through adversity... Behold, God is all powerful ! Who is a teacher like Him? Job 34:14-30 Job 36:5-15, 26 Back to M&V Trailhead HIKING THE TRAIL OF TRUTH |
