Dec/Jan Letter From the Editor: The Wonder of Clouds

I'm sure, if you have at any time been able to view the clouds of the sky, that they have caused you to contemplate or to wonder about them. Though we usually consider them with regard to weather conditions, the Scriptures usually refer to clouds in a metaphoric or figurative sense. God compared His people's faithfulness to a morning cloud which fades away (Hosea 6:4). In despair, Job compared his prosperity to the passing of clouds (Job 30:15). Clouds also veil and reveal the divine presence of God, as the pillar of cloud of Exodus symbolized God's presence and guidance to the children of Israel in their wilderness journeys. Clouds appeared at the Lord's transfiguration (Matthew 17:5), and at His ascension (Acts 1:9). Finally, when Jesus returns, He will come with and upon clouds (Matthew 24:30, 26:64, Acts 1:11).

The appearance of clouds vary so much. When I was a boy, my parents and I played a game which involved identifying the shapes of clouds with something familiar. Nowadays, clouds serve to remind me of God's artwork, in that they are like paintings against the sky that are quite impossible to duplicate. Each day brings about new, picturesque dimensions which become food for thought.— No matter how we view clouds; how we feel about their presence or their shapes, or how we may interpret their meanings, we have most certainly considered them on many occasions within our lifetime. As I grow older however, when I watch the clouds, I usually try to imagine what type of clouds Jesus will return upon. In these difficult times I find myself doing that quite often. I think about still being alive at His coming. I wonder what He will look like, and I wonder how I will feel as I see the graves open and people ascending toward Him (1st Thessalonians 4:13-18). I wonder how I will feel when I find myself among them. Will my tears be of both joy and relief?  I would certainly think so.

Hiking as much as I do, I have indeed spent some time considering the clouds. I feel most fortunate for being allowed sight. Many things pass through our eyes that we take for granted. It is therefore wise to truly take notice while we can. Clouds can teach us something about ourselves. They can bring shade from the hot sun, just as we can be an encouragement to others in difficult times. Clouds which bring rain are refreshing...in the same way we can use our abilities to refresh others. There are also clouds that do not bring rain; clouds without water. These symbolize those of us who make promises but do not keep them, or those of us who refuse to be merciful to others. Dark clouds on the other hand are a symbol of mystery, and represent the sin in our lives. There are for sure many ways we can consider clouds. That is why God made them. I believe all things were made to help us to better understand ourselves. God has allowed nature to be one of our greatest teachers. That's what Hiking the Trail of Truth is all about.

I recently took a photograph while hiking on a mountain. I stood above the clouds, and you can view what I viewed on the cover of this very Newsletter. I have seen this wonder many times. I've always wished that I could take off my shoes and just run right out onto the clouds without falling through them. I've often wondered what they would feel like under my feet. Perhaps in the new world we will be able to do something like this. I think about the next world alot when I contemplate the clouds. When I dwell on the things of God, my thoughts usually always evolve forward to that particular time in history. After all, that's what the Christian hope is all about.— It is difficult waiting on the Lord's promise to return...the cares of this life and this present world war so violently against our souls. Perhaps the wonder and mystery of thoughts and anticipations regarding clouds can allow us to be content until the great day of that event.

In the next HTTOT Newsletter, we will take a profound look at yet another Letter from the Editor. Until then, I thank you for and am honored by your time.  Next letter from the editor; By the Book

Dec/Jan INSIGHTS, from friend's of HIKING THE TRAIL OF TRUTH:

NEVER FORGET JESUS  “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth laborers into his harvest.”
(Luke 10: 2 King James Version)

Many years ago I felt the call to missions and I told my pastor. He said there was an opening in the Missions Service Corps. He told me I would have to raise my own support so I went from church to church in our association speaking on missions and I raised my support. They sent me to Phoenix, Arizona to the Indian Reservation. However, I only stayed two days and called my pastor and said this was not where I should be so he told me to come home. We had Bible Stories for the children and different activities. At the end of the first day I went to the mission leader’s room and asked him what time we had devotions. He replied, “We are too tired at the end of the day and too busy at the start of the day for devotions”.

I didn’t say anything to him but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the reason we were here was to spread the Love of Jesus. If we didn’t take time for Jesus, to talk to Him and thank Him and ask Him for help and guidance, then our labors would be in vain. Everything that we do in life should be for Jesus. It is all about Jesus. He is the Giver and Sustainer of life. We must never forget Jesus or leave Him out of our daily lives. If we don’t receive instruction and support from Him, we will never be effective like He wants us to be for Him. I encourage you to always remember and include Jesus in your daily activities. You will find that you will have a much better day.

Along The Trail of Truth

Along the Trail of Truth is HTTOT's newest addition to the Newsletter and replaces the former Friends Along the Trail segment. Along the Trail of Truth is a no-nonsense look at the world's latest ideas and/or publications, and 'sets the record straight' concerning them. God's word teaches us that the wisdom of the world is indeed foolishness with God, and that He has also chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the so-called wise (1st Corinthians 1:19-31). Relative to this profound reality, Along the Trail of Truth takes a look at natural mankind's perception of things and passes onto you the truth of the matter...

The Real Christmas Story

The first mention of the observance of Christmas on December 25th is in the time of Constantine, about A.D. 325. The actual date of the birth of Christ is not known. The word Christmas is formed of Christ + Mass, meaning a mass of religious service in commemoration of the birth of Christ. Whether the early Christians thought of or observed Christmas is not clear. Once introduced, the observance spread throughout Christendom. Some Christian bodies however continue to disapprove of the festival. Many customs of pagan origin have be become part of Christmas, e.g., the Christmas tree; but most of those no longer have a heathen connotation but have acquired a Christian meaning. The Christmas tree points upward to God and reminds us of His gifts. A commemoration of the birth of Christ in harmonious keeping with the events surrounding that birth is a natural and normal expression of love and reverence for Jesus Christ... Here is the truth of the story...

(Matthew 1:18-25)  This is how the birth of Jesus came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a just man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,  "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  "The virgin shall be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"—which means, "God with us."  When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

(Luke 2:1-20)  In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said,  "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

(Matthew 2:1-15)  After Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod, some wise men (Magi) from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,  "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?  For we have seen his star in the east and have come to worship him."  When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born.  "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written:  But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.

Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said,  "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him."  After they heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.

Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.  "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."  So he got up and took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where they stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet:  Out of Egypt I called my son.

A TALE OF CHRISTMAS

So many Christmas have come and gone...sixty years of them for me. Naturally I was too young to remember my first one in 1945, but I do remember one in the early '50's. It was the first one at which we bought and celebrated with a live tree, then planted it in the back yard after the holidays. The last time I saw that tree back there in Ohio was in 2002. It is at least forty feet tall now and consumes most of the back lot of that house in that small neighborhood where I grew up. My parents made the Christmas celebration very special every year when I was a youth. Because of that influence it has always remained special, yet, somewhere along the line I forgot to carry my Christmas attitude throughout the year each year. I lost sight of its daily meaning and suffered the consequence of losing sight of my life, year after year. A day without God is indeed a day without sunshine, and an accumulation of those days over months and years of time is utterly disastrous...

Christmas is lonely now. I have many regrets, yet it is still the brightest and most hopeful time of the year. It is a time to ponder Christmas' past...and to be thankful of what the years, though stained with difficulty, sadness and sin, have taught me. I realize that if I had not made so many mistakes, I would have learned nothing. Through great loss, I have been allowed great gain. Though the songs of Christmas bring sadness, they also bring great hope. Christmas is still important, and for many has become a time of miracles. Most of the greatest of human stories have something to do with Christmas. The greatest of human stories always have something to do with God...

If I could go back in time with the knowledge I have gained over the years, Christmas would be different, and the times in between each succeeding Christmas would be different as well. I would start each day with a prayer, such as Psalm 113:3; From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. Prayers such as this cause us to remember God throughout the day; to be thankful for His blessings. They can remind us to walk in the Spirit of His love; to be kind to others and to put God first in our daily routine. It does not take much effort to forget God, since we are by our sinful nature not subject to His will and indeed cannot be (Romans 8:7). Only when our minds dwell on His Spirit within us can we please Him. We are to figuratively bind his teachings on our fingers, like a ring, and write them on the tablets of our hearts (Proverbs 7:3).

What will you do with Christmas this year?  Perhaps it is a good time for you to start walking with God on a daily basis; moment to moment. Since I did not do this for most of my earlier life, I bear consequences that I cannot change. I bear loss, grief and sorrow. These things are ever before me and make life more difficult than it had to be. Yet, every day there is new hope, and as I said earlier, the Christmas season enlarges that hope. I am indeed thankful for this glorious time of year when more people express the attitudes of God through the holiday festivities. Miracles can happen when people focus their minds and hearts on God. Please pray for a miracle for me this season, and I will pray for one for you. We are God's children, and He will give us great encouragement when we ask Him.

I pray that your Christmas story this year will be full of hope and small miracles...even great miracles if that is what you need. There's nothing better than a good Christmas story. Many writers over the years have blessed us with some enduring tales of the Yuletide season. Our very first issue of the website Newsletter (December 2002) is where one such tale begins. It's called A Winter's Tale, and is continued in several succeeding Newsletters (up through episode 13, Dec 2003). I hope you will take the time to go to the Newsletter Archives and print out the adventure for your holiday reading this year... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Hiking the Trail of Truth!

A Tale of Christmas' Past...The Big Wheel...(found in the HTTOT mailbox, author anonymous)

In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two. Their Dad had never been much more than a presence they feared. Whenever they heard his tires crunch on the gravel driveway they would scramble to hide under their beds. He did manage to leave $15 a week to buy groceries. Now that he had decided to leave, there would be no more beatings, but no food either.

If there was a welfare system in effect in southern Indiana at that time, I certainly knew nothing about it. I scrubbed the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress, loaded them into the rusty old 51 Chevy, and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck. The kids stayed crammed into the car and tried to be quiet while I tried to convince whomever would listen that I was willing to learn or do anything. I had to have a job. Still no luck. The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, was an old Root Beer Barrel drive-in that had been converted to a truck stop. It was called the Big Wheel...

An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard shift; eleven at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour and I could start that night. I raced home and called the teenager down the street that baby-sat for people. I bargained with her to come and sleep on my sofa for a dollar a night. She could arrive with her pajamas on and the kids would already be asleep. This seemed like a good arrangement to her, so we made a deal. That night when the little ones and I knelt to say our prayers, we all thanked God for finding Mommy a job.

And so I started at the Big Wheel. When I got home in the mornings, I woke the baby-sitter up and sent her home with one dollar of my tip money—fully half of what I averaged every night. As the weeks went by, heating bills added a strain to my meager wage. The tires on the old Chevy had the consistency of penny balloons and began to leak. I had to fill them with air on the way to work and again every morning before I could go home. One bleak fall morning I dragged myself to the car to go home and found four tires in the back seat. New tires!  There was no note, no nothing, just those beautiful brand new tires. Had angels taken up residence in Indiana ?  I wondered. I made a deal with the local service station. In exchange for his mounting the new tires, I would clean up his office. I remember it took me a lot longer to scrub his floor than it did for him to do the tires.

I was now working six nights instead of five and it still wasn't enough. Christmas was coming and I knew there would be no money for toys for the kids. I found a can of red paint and started repairing and painting some old toys. I then hid them in the basement so there would be something for Santa to deliver on Christmas morning. Clothes were a worry too. I was sewing patches on top of patches on the boy's pants and soon they would be too far gone to repair.

On Christmas Eve the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. These were the truckers; Les, Frank, and Jim, and a state trooper named Joe. A few musicians were hanging around after a gig at the Legion and were dropping nickels in the pinball machine. The regulars all just sat around and talked through the wee hours of the morning and then left to get home before the sun came up. When it was time for me to go home at seven o'clock on Christmas morning, to my amazement. my old battered Chevy was filled full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes!

I quickly opened the driver's side door, crawled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was a whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10!  I looked inside another box:  It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside some of the other boxes. There was candy and nuts and bananas and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and Jell-O and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was a whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items. And there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll !

As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on the most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning. Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December. And they all hung out at the Big Wheel truck stop...

Encouraging Gods' Children

Here is this months' list of those who need encouragement through your prayers and letters. I hope you will take the time to encourage them... Some of their problems are personal and we will respect their privacy; leaving it up to those individuals to share at their discretion. Please pray for them and write to them (I can provide addresses for you. Please call, E-mail or write to me for that information). Encouragement is a noble thing and a profound way to honor God through lifting up His children... Please inform me if you would like to add anyone to our prayer list. Also, please check Newsletter Archives for folks previously on the prayer list.

Let us this month encourage and pray for...

Those in the US disaster areas... Folks from Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Indiana need your prayers. This is a great time to both pray for and help those displaced by the great storms. God will hear your prayers, and He will notice your gift, no matter how small. There are several countries throughout the world experiencing disasters as well, both human and natural. Pray that our Lord will continue to watch over and strengthen His children during these times, and perhaps bring those who are not His children into His family. The Lord is our refuge and strength in any type of disaster.

UPDATE on Suzi Schnippert of Florida, November 23... Thank you for your prayers...please continue to keep my wife Suzi in your prayers. With her emphysema, her oxygen dependency is worsening more and more we have not heard from the Transplant specialists yet. She is a trooper, going to PT three times a week trying to get stronger physically to prepare for the procedure but the numbers are worsening, slowly but surely....Love, Bill Schnippert. (More information on Suzi can be found in the Oct/Nov 2005 Newsletter)

Stephen Sanderson..., son of Arcadia CA Police Chief, Bob Sanderson:   Please pray for my son, Stephen, who is currently serving in Ramadi, Iraq with the 3/7th Marines. They undergo daily mortar fire, AK47 fire and improvised explosive roadway bombs... We join with Chief Sanderson in not only praying for his dear son, but also for all of his son's comrades in arms, and all other sons and daughters of America who are serving for us in some capacity within a foreign land. May the Lord be merciful...
Update 10/6...  Hi again Mark, I received a phone call from my son Stephen this morning. He was calling from a phone booth in Iraq. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on October 1st. He is in good spirits. He is part of Operation River Grade wherein 2,500 Marines are going through towns along the Euphrates River routing out insurgents, going door to door. This is in preparation for the Oct. 15th constitutional vote. He has been in country one month and is due to return to the US in March/April time frame. With telephones and e-mail we keep in touch about once a week. Thanks for your continuing prayers for him. Yours truly, Bob Sanderson.

Please remember all of the homeless and the poor of the world again this month. Try to locate a homeless person and help them in any way that you can... Continue to pray for all of those in need of daily bread, and please pray earnestly for all the people of the world in which we live, in every country, that men and women will desire to find wisdom, that they will turn and seek God's face in this world full of spiritual blindness, rebellion and increasing depravity. The Lord's coming will not be delayed much longer. Endeavor to encourage others to seek Him, in truth, while there is still time.

Father, grant us the humility to seek Your face for the well being of others. Help us to reach out to them, with kindness, in word and in deed. We are, each one of us, in need of Your guidance in the use of possessions, our prosperity, our tongues and our talents. Though we are quite unworthy, we ask you to bless our efforts... In the name of your glorious Son, Jesus, we pray.

Thank you so much for hiking with us through the December / January issue of the Hiking the Trail of Truth Newsletter. Until February then, may the grace of our Lord Jesus be upon you...
Sincerely, Mark S Taylor
