Aug/Sept Letter From the Editor:  Attitudes That Work

Attitudes are the essence of human life. They do indeed make us, or break us. The attitudes we are born with, what we learn from our parents or our peers or through other means of education, may not however be the right attitudes that will allow us to develop the needed personality for living in and dealing with this present world. Bottom line—attitudes which are not God-centered will cripple and even destroy our daily living. What most people don't know about God and about themselves could fill volumes, and Godless attitudes are killers. Only through a knowledge of the One, true God can one learn and apply the attitudes that lead to inner peace and security, both of which are needed to navigate the tumultuous trails of this earthly life.

What do I mean?  If your attitudes in life depend on your socialization, your work, your habits or your expectations, or even your dreams, you will encounter failure. There is no hope in worldly attitudes. Just turn on the six o'clock news and you'll see the results of human attitudes. They result in racial clashes, bitterness, hatred, strife and war. They are full of pride and arrogance, whose end is meaningless death. On the other hand, Godly attitudes work toward peace and security in all walks of life; no if's, and's, or buts about it. Let us therefore examine some Godly attitudes that work; that will make a difference in your life...

1.  Let's begin with your rising in the morning. God's compassion (mercy) is new every morning. What an encouraging thing to think about!  That sunrise was created for you. What deep manner of love has been bestowed upon you!  Get on your knees and take it in!  Smell the morning air and feel God's kindness, knowledge and strength. He is far above you in each of these attributes. Why then question His methods or His timing?  Put on humility and let Him guide your day. Ask Him to do that for you as you greet the morning. Know that He is in charge of all things, and whatever becomes of your day has reasoning and purpose, usually beyond your limited comprehension.

2.  You are a servant in the world; an ambassador of the Most High; if you are a child of God. Your duty is kindness to all, even in the face of adversity. Gentleness is your scepter, and words of encouragement should flow from your lips. Disappointment and frustration are part of your nature, so focus instead on the wonders of God. A blade of grass and the flower were created through love. Dwell on the magnificence of them when you are tempted to act contrary to love. Love covers a multitude of sins, so train yourself to practice patience and self-control in dealing with both humans and animals. All things God has made are sacred, so, treat them as such. Don't be deceived by the shallowness of men's hearts.

3.  Mankind is forever ruining the earth, so don't forget God's landscape. The earth is a gift from God (Psalm 115:16).  Get out of the city and walk in the wilderness and let no works of men be your delight. Delight instead in all of God's creatures. Don't squash that little bug at your feet or you will be squashed. Respect the rocks and the trees, the hills and the mountains. Don't be anxious in your daily routine but let God have His way. Guard every word you speak as if it were gold set in fine jewelry, for the wrong words at the wrong time can shatter another's heart and cause days, weeks, months and even years of sorrow or bitterness. The attitude of love brings glory to God and exalts His purpose for the world. The whole duty of man is to delight in and keep God's precepts. Believe me, from experience, all else is worthless.

Along The Trail of Truth

Along the Trail of Truth is HTTOT's newest addition to the Newsletter and replaces the former Friends Along the Trail segment. Along the Trail of Truth is a no-nonsense look at the world's latest ideas and/or publications, and 'sets the record straight' concerning them. God's word teaches us that the wisdom of the world is indeed foolishness with God, and that He has also chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the so-called wise (1st Corinthians 1:19-31). Relative to this profound reality, Along the Trail of Truth takes a look at natural mankind's perception of things and respectfully passes onto you the truth of the matter...

The End of Time

There are many theories on the end times. Hundreds of books have been written on the subject and, since we live in a world where sensationalism abounds, various authors have focused on that within their "fantastic" writings. Unfortunately, I have read few books that teach the simple truth on the matter. I have visited so-called "Christian" book stores that contain more books on the end of the world than any other books, yet, have found none which have told the simple truth. Much like watching the evening news, their best selling writings are more books of fiction than reality, as are their diverse interpretive collections on the Biblical book of Revelation.

What is the end time reality?  As to the day and hour of the end of the ages, no man can know (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32). The angels don't know, Jesus doesn't know, according to Scripture only the Father knows. Much like us, with their hope based on Christs' return and the resurrection of the dead, the early Christians were equally concerned about the end times. The New Testament writers answered their questions through authoritative written narratives. These narratives (found only in the New Testament collection) describe all of the main events concerning that time. God is not the author of confusion (1st Corinthians 14:33). He has left us well informed through a condensed version of what we are to know concerning those events, written in practical and understandable language. We will discuss here what He has said, in chronological order, concerning the end times, the return of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, the physical changes of the Christians for entering into eternal life, their departure into the air, and the final destruction of this present heavens and earth...

The "second coming" of Christ is mentioned over 300 times in 260 chapters of the New Testament. Jesus referred to His return approximately 20 times in the four gospels. The words "second coming" do not actually appear in the Scriptures and tend to make the message sound like Christ is actually going to set foot on the earth again. Christ will not set foot on this present earth again. The Hebrew letter says that He will appear a second time, which supports the truth that he will only appear in the sky (in the air) and not on the surface of the earth (Hebrews 9:28, 1st Thessalonians 5:17). He would also have no reason whatsoever to step onto this present earth; The purpose of His coming is to render up His spiritual kingdom (the Church) and deliver it to God (1st Corinthians 15:24). The Church is the only thing Christ intends to rescue out of this material world, and it by nature is a spiritual kingdom; His spiritual kingdom, which came into existence about 33 AD, and has continued since then to grow. Christ never intended to build a physical kingdom here. All material substances will be burned up (John 18:36, 2nd Peter 3:10).

The return of Christ is going to be a personal, visible, world-wide appearance; completely the opposite of His first appearance as a helpless babe in an animal shelter. There will be no advance warning to give people time and opportunity to get ready; For as lightning comes from the east and is seen even to the west, so shall be the coming of the Son of Man. The world will be caught off-guard. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. A thief strikes when we least expect it. Our pleasure mad, physically oriented society will be spiritually asleep. Jesus will come suddenly on the clouds of heaven and every eye shall see Him. Not a person in the entire world will miss out on this, shall we say, "life changing" event!  (Matthew 24:26, 27, 1st Thessalonians 5:2, Luke 12:39,40, Revelation 1:7)

Though Christ is most assuredly coming to redeem the saved, He is also coming to judge the unsaved; The hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. God's written Word, the Bible, will be the measure of that judgment. This judgment will be according to ones' deeds as they relate to Gods' Word. Those who have been ashamed of the person of Jesus and His teachings in their lives will at this time find Him to be ashamed of them, even confessing to them that He never knew them. (John 5:28,29, 12:48, Revelation 20:12, Matthew 16:27, 7:23)

According to the Bible, the moment Jesus appears, Christians will be changed... When the Lord appears an archangel will shout and the trumpet of God will be heard. The dead will then come forth from their graves, all the dead from both land and sea. The Christian dead, along with the Christians who are alive, will undergo, in the twinkling of an eye, a miraculous change in the body that will cause body and spirit to be both incorruptible and immortal. They will see Christ as He truly is for they shall be like Him. Death is swallowed up through this victory and will be no more. All Christians will then rise from the earth together, into the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. From then on, into eternity, they will always be with the Lord.  (1st Corinthians 15:35-55, 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18, Revelation 20:13, Ist John 3:2)

The day will not go well with the unsaved dead who have risen, nor for the unsaved which remain alive at His coming. For them, it is judgment day, the day they face everlasting death. Since their names were not written in Gods' Book of Life, they will be cast into what the Bible calls the lake of fire, for their ultimate destruction. Satan and his angels will also be destroyed. This is an everlasting destruction; Their flesh, their soul, their spirits, their being, will be no more. It will be as if they never existed, for there will be no memory of them. (John 5:28,29, Acts 24:15, Revelation 20:10-15, Job 7:8-10)

This present earth and its heavens will also be completely destroyed. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it shall be burned up (2nd Peter 3:10). Nevertheless, according to the promise of God, there will be new heavens and a new earth. This will be a paradise, perhaps similar to this present earth prior to the devastating and reshaping flood of Noah (For more on the pre-flood earth, we suggest that you hike to the Mirror Lake junction on the Trail of Time at this website).  (Isaiah 65:17, 66:22, 2nd Peter 3:13, Revelation: chpt 21)

The teachings regarding the main events of the end times have been made simple (easy to understand) through the words of Jesus and the New Testament writings of the Apostles. It was intended to be easily understood that we might be well prepared. What makes it, for the majority, difficult to understand are the volumes of interpretations found on the shelves of your local "Christian" bookstore. Sensationalism abounds here, and that is the tool the enemy of truth uses to insure that you are unprepared. Through various authors, he cunningly weaves the philosophy of the so-called educated of the world, and false Christian philosophy of the world, together, into, and tightly around the words of God. The main problem with these false teachers is their inability to discern the spiritual from the physical. Granted, there are some things within the Bible regarding the end times, especially within the book of Revelation, that are hard to be understood. These particular teachers and their students, being actually untaught and unstable, twist these teachings to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures (2nd Peter 3:16).

While we are in our present bodies the realities of heaven are unseen, and we know them only by faith. The hope founded on what faith teaches gives us the courage to endure and to dream. We can form an idea of the perfect life of heaven only from what we know imperfectly at this time... Our communion with God and with other Christians will be unbroken. There will be no pain, no sorrow or death. Life will never end. We will see and know Jesus as He truly is... forever. Both Paul and John had a glimpse of this paradise and described it as inexpressibly glorious...

It is difficult for us to comprehend what it will be like there, but not unimaginable. Perhaps, as you hike along this earthly trail, you might closely examine the intricacy of a wildflower. The goodness, kindness and completeness of Gods' creative ability is written all over it. His love and compassion radiate from within it. I don't know about you, but to me this makes the glories of heaven somewhat more imaginable.
(2nd Corinthians 12:4, Revelation 21:22)

I will praise you, my God and my King, and bless Your name forever and ever. I will bless You every day, and I will praise You forever. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! His greatness is beyond discovery! Let each generation tell its children of Your mighty acts. I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works... The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. (Psalm 145:1-5 & 18)

Thanks for hiking "Along the Trail of Truth" for August and September. More profound information related to life on this present earth and beyond can be found on the "Trail of Time" at this website. See you again next time.

GOD AND ARCHES He does great things past finding out, yes, wonders without number...  (Job 9:10)

Arches National Park is still another distinguished monument of our Creator, one that definitely leaves you in awe over the great power of water. I have visited this area many times in recent years and it's good to be back here and even better that you are here with me. God has indeed left some real images of art for us to view here. Some of them are actually humorous (don't think for one minute that God doesn't have a sense of humor). Our hike through this area will confirm these things for you in a most remarkable way...

The initial flood deposits in this area (about 2460 BC) consisted of a vast number of hills and mounds of good quality clay which were, just a brief time later, reformed and finely sculptured by the turbulence of receding waters. God indeed left some profound shapes here. I call it the "check this out, folks" display of Gods' handiwork. The carvings here are most impressively representative of the human race and of the animal inhabitants of the earth. There are Biblical students who believe that this area is the remains of an ancient city, that the sculpturing is the work of men. That's a possibility but not a probability. The secular opinion of course is that Arches was eroded into these shapes by wind and water over billions of years. We know that idea is absurd, an absolute impossibility in the mind of the true Christian, since the earth itself, as we know it, is just over 6000 years old.

My personal opinion is that God challenges mankind here at Arches, but in a kind and humorous way. Knowing that we should be able to see His mind in these works here (Romans 1:18-20), knowing that He is going to have the so-called experts come up with all kinds of explanations here, and knowing too that He is going to delight those who have true understanding (His own children), He allowed that this area, later named by men as Arches National Park, would be a monument to the creativity of God, and perhaps a preview of the eventual history of mankind in the United States...

There are a myriad of shapes here. Of the animals there are elephants, horses, cattle, sheep and rams, lions, coyotes, and birds such as the eagle. Of men there are the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and other figures of the Revolution. There are infants in the arms of women, patriots marching and casualties of war. Abraham Lincoln is giving an oratory at a podium. There are civil war soldiers lurking about and slaves huddled in fear. There are statues of American Indians, while on a considerably larger scale are the scar-faced profiles of Indian warriors and chiefs. There are also groups here and there which appear to be a diversity of people engaged in prayer. Then there's Park Avenue; walls of rock that resemble downtown New York City. There's indeed much more to be found here, and it doesn't take any stretch of the imagination to do so...

The famous Delicate Arch, the location of which is indeed an inspiring hike over red rock, looks like the torso and legs of a bowlegged cowboy wearing a pair of chaps. He may have been whole at one time, as there is a lot of broken rock in the valley just below him. In a canyon just behind this arch is a group of women standing around a well. There are huge bowls that resemble pottery here and at other locations throughout the park as well. There are rocks that resemble pueblos and still others that resemble castles. Depending on the time of day, the shadows created by the sun making its way through the park serve to highlight this grand display of artwork in a diversity of ways. Towering spires, pinnacles and balanced rocks perched atop seemingly inadequate bases are among these scenic spectacles. Then there are the many and varied arches themselves...

There are more than 2,000 arches within the park, ranging in size from a three foot opening (the minimum considered an arch) to the longest one, Landscape Arch, which measures 306 feet from base to base. Some of the arches are extremely tall, with huge spans, and you will seasonally find an occasional rock climber atop them. I myself enjoy viewing the clouds through the archways as they pass behind providing an excellent backdrop, continuously changing their exquisite formations. I once photographed the moon during daylight hours through the span of a lengthy arch. It was indeed an impressive photo for an amateur; postcard material for sure. After sunset many arches throughout the park provide unique views of the evening stars through their open archways.— Why so many arches? God likes arches. He is not unlike us in having favorites; the first thing He gave us after the great flood was an arch... Remember the rainbow?

Again, there's much to see in this unique area of land where most of this particular composition of clay, over the last 4500 years or so, has hardened to stone. All of the clay formations in the area look as if they were baked in an oven. Indeed, the suns' heat over a period of time is surely responsible for this work. Perhaps it only took a few years after the formations were born to accomplish this. Geologists have numerous theories on this particular aging process, but only God knows... All I know is that the entire area is a most remarkable display of His handiwork
(Psalm 95:5, Proverbs 26:10, Isaiah 45:18, Acts 17:24).

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to hike here with me through this outstanding red rock country... I hope you too were inspired!  It is certainly a great place to wander through, to allow your mind to take the time to ponder the wonder of God in His unequalled creativity, to meditate deeply on all His works and to consider, within our finite minds, the infinite height and breadth of His wisdom.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (John 1:3)

Our journey today comes from The Lake Trail at this website. Thanks for hiking with me today. I hope you will join me again next time for another Trail Tales adventure. Until then, may God be with you along your journey in life. Sincerely, MS Taylor HTTOT

Encouraging Gods' Children

Here is this months' list of those who need encouragement through your prayers and letters. I hope you will take the time to encourage them... Some of their problems are personal and we will respect their privacy; leaving it up to those individuals to share at their discretion. Please pray for them and write to them (I can provide addresses for you. Please call, E-mail or write to me for that information). Encouragement is a noble thing and a profound way to honor God through lifting up His children... Please inform me if you would like to add anyone to our prayer list. Also, please check Newsletter Archives for folks and their situations previously on the prayer list.

Let us this month encourage and pray for...

My cousin, Suzi, and her family, August 20th... From Suzi...Hi ya Mark...so good to hear from you. Thanks for including Sandy on the prayer list. We went in to see her tonight with my daughter and granddaughter. I am trying to go everyday now as I know her days are limited. She is in Hospice care and they are so good to her. She is bedridden but still hopeful that she will get well. Mikie and I talked to the DR. yesterday and he said she may only have a few weeks based on how she seems to be going downhill. It is very sad, as she waited too long to go to the DR. and the cancer advanced far too fast. All is well with myself, hubby and my kids. I fee VERY blessed. Keep in touch... Love ya, Cuz Suzi...
Update, Aug 25th... We are extremely saddened by the news that my cousin, Sandy Peckham, Suzi's older sister, has just passed away in Nevada after a long bout with cancer. Sandy's refreshing personality and warm smile will be missed by many here on the earth, yet, we will see her again!  Please continue steadfastly to keep her great family in your prayers.

Update on Tim Murray, August 22nd... My good friend and "legend in his own time" has just passed away in Sierra Vista Arizona. He fought his cancer in the spirit of a true warrior. Tim and I hiked many trails together, including a climb to the top of the mighty Mt. Whitney in 1970. His departure leaves me quite empty, yet not without hope. Please pray for Tim's family; his wife, Dori and daughter Sara, who are currently at the residence, and other family members who are in California. Tim was of the finest sort, and we will indeed miss him. He has gone the way of the eagle—He has embarked on the journey that a few of us long for... Thank God we will get to see him again, and soon, I hope!

Those in the US disaster areas...Folks from Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Indiana still need your prayers. This is a great time to both pray for and help those displaced by the great storms. God will hear your prayers, and He will notice your gift, no matter how small. There are several countries throughout the world experiencing disasters as well, both human and natural. These disasters vary and occur daily. Pray that our Lord will continue to watch over and strengthen His children during these times, and perhaps bring those who are not His children into His family. The Lord is our refuge and strength in any type of disaster.

Update on Suzi Schnippert, July 19th, 2006... Update on my Suzi and her emphysema: After an insurance paperwork snafu that held us up for 9 months, we finally got referred to the Transplant Center! We got initially turned down due the fact that to her weight [BMI] was too high for the surgery. SO ‘we’ve’ lost about half the weight needed and are steadily working our way to our goal. Suzi feels that she will not need the surgery as the Lord will heal her before ‘it takes the ending of another’s life to sustain mine.’ — Keep us in your prayers and you are in ours. I pray that the wildfires are not affecting you... Sincerely, Bill Schnippert (More information on Bill and Suzi can be found beginning in the June/July 2005 Newsletter and subsequent Newsletters... See Newsletter Archives).

Update on Carli, June 11th, 2006... (More information on Carli can be found in the March 2004 and subsequent HTTOT Newsletters... See Newsletter Archives)...

Here she is, out of surgery and in her pink below the knee walking cast. She was a trooper, as usual. Dr. Paley took the fixator off yesterday, June 9, and in two weeks she will get a waterproof cast so she can swim. The casts will be on for six weeks. They had to break her tibia, again, to reposition it. Carli was due to be released from the hospital today, and maybe come home tonight, but for sure they will be back home tomorrow. Thanks to all of you for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate any and all of you, for your help keeping her in Gods thoughts. I will update later, as she starts walking again.
Love, Grandma Cheryl

June 17th...Okay, her face is a little blurry, but take into consideration, this is only four days after her surgery and, having her tibia broken again, she is trying to balance on that one leg. She had a rough day the day after the surgery; lots of pain and swelling and they had to slit the sides of her cast because of it, so that's why there is duct tape on it. She hasn't really started to walk as of yet, only been a week, but she is standing and trying to put weight on it, as you can see in this picture. She goes back to Baltimore on the 26 of June and Dr Paley is going to put a waterproof cast on so she can swim and not miss her whole summer like she did last year. She certainly is a trooper. Keep her in your prayers, along with all of the other people you pray for each day.
Thanks, all of you. Cheryl

Update on Carli, August 2, 2006:  Here she is in all of her glory. She is done with surgery for now, and maybe forever!   She will go back to Dr. Paley periodically so he can watch her growth and make sure her leg is the same length as her other one. Imagine, three different doctors wanted to amputate that precious little leg. Look at her now, and she is starting to walk again!  Its all sore from the surgery and the pins that have been in it, but each day is a huge step forward for her. God works wonders, and Dr. Paley is certainly one of those wonders. Thank you, again, all of you, for your thoughts and prayers for this precious little girl.  Love, Cheryl...

Please remember our US Troops...who are on foreign soil defending our freedom and the freedom of others less fortunate. We have many sons and daughters engaged in this effort. Let us pray for their ability to endure, and for their safe and victorious return from a land where the one, true God is unknown.

Please remember all of the homeless and the poor of the world again this month. Try to locate a homeless person and help them in any way that you can... Continue to pray for all of those in need of daily bread, and please pray earnestly for all the people of the world in which we live, in every country, that men and women will desire to find wisdom, that they will turn and seek God's face in this world full of spiritual blindness, rebellion and increasing depravity. The Lord's coming will not be delayed much longer. Endeavor to encourage others to seek Him, in truth, while there is still time.

Father, grant us the humility to seek Your face for the well being of others. Help us to reach out to them, with kindness, in word and in deed. We are, each one of us, in need of Your guidance in the use of possessions, our prosperity, our tongues and our talents. Though we are quite unworthy, we ask you to bless our efforts... In the name of your glorious Son, Jesus, we pray.

Thank you so much for hiking with us through the August / September issue of the Hiking the Trail of Truth Newsletter. Until October then, may the grace of our Lord Jesus be upon you...
Sincerely, Mark S Taylor
